Sundered faiths rejoin amid the lantern lights of children at an ecumenical celebration in Erfurt, Germany, where Luther studied, entered a monastery, and was ordained a priest in the cathedral, at left, in 1507. Annually on November 10 , his birthday, Protestants and Catholics gather here to honor both him and the Catholic Saint Martin, whose name the infant was given on the saints feast day, November 11. 1983 was officially proclaimed as Luther Year by the then German Democratic Republic. The cathedral dates from the 14th century and the church at the right , St. Severus, dates from the 13th to 15th centuries. |

Digital Archive Japan / DAJ, Albert Einstein, (1879-1955), theoretical physicist, and his sister Maja as small children, 1880s. Einsteins main contribution to science was the theory of relativity, regarded by many as the most important theory in the history of physics. His special (1905) and general (1916) theories of relativity, proved the concept that time does not exist at the same rate for everyone and everything. Special Relativity produced the equation which expresses the equivalence between matter and energy: E=mc squared. In 1921, Einstein received the Nobel Prize for Physics. His Jewish faith meant that he had to leave Germany during the Nazi period, emigrating to the USA and taking American citizenship. |

The two continue to live together with Arinas daughter Nadja, 10, in the apartment building where the original Material World Big Picture was taken. Arina has a new boyfriend, newly dyed red hair, and works for a German aid organization. }} {{Uncivil War: Before the war, Sarajevans in the old city, nestled in their homes and apartments on the valley floor along the river Miljacka, lived a generally comfortable life. Under siege, they were sitting ducks for the paramilitary forces looking down on them from the hills. The task of survival wholly consumed daily life. Women, children, and the elderly braved snipers bullets to stand in line for water rations and to find food, while able-bodied men went to the front lines to fight. Public utilities and services were nonexistent. The citys ragtag soldiers carried firewood home to their families, as there was no electricity or gas to run their modern stoves. Thousands died in the war and in the city Physically the city is being revitalized, both by donor countries and by the return of commerce. Emotional scars, however, are slow to heal in this city whose relatively cohesive multiethnic population was torn apart by clashing nationalist ideologies. ©2005 Hungry Planet: What the World Eats}} |
